I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Messen and the entire team at Carolina Fertility Institute. From my very first appointment through my egg retrieval today, every single person has made this journey feel supported, organized, and filled with compassion. Dr. Messen is truly exceptional. He is incredibly knowledgeable, honest, and straightforward, exactly the type of physician I appreciate. He takes the time to explain everything clearly, and it is obvious that he genuinely wants every patient to have the greatest chance of success. I have always felt that he is fully invested in my care and would do everything possible to help me achieve my dream of building a family. The entire team operates like a well-oiled machine. They are professional, efficient, and incredibly responsive. Phone calls and portal messages are returned promptly, questions are answered thoroughly, and every interaction has been positive. Their communication and organization have made what could be a stressful process feel so much easier. A special thank you to the embryologists, who were so focused, skilled, and efficient. It gave me so much confidence knowing my eggs were in such capable hands. My wife even got to watch the lab, staff count my eggs, which was Such a memorable experience! I also want to recognize some incredible staff members who made a lasting impression. My nurse, Mary is always so kind, professional, and welcoming, with a smile that immediately puts you at ease. Emily, Sha'Bra, Amanda, and the CRNA were all absolutely wonderful. My surgery nurses, Heather and another smiling gem in the procedure room whose name I unfortunately missed because I was drifting off to sleep, provided such compassionate care and made me feel completely comfortable. Every member of the surgical team treated me with genuine kindness and respect. The front desk staff at every office deserve recognition as well. They are always friendly, helpful, and efficient. I also had the opportunity to visit the Asheville office for one of my monitoring appointments, and I was so impressed. The office is beautiful, and everyone there was just as warm, welcoming, and professional. The financial team has been wonderful! They made the entire process seamless, and did not make you feel like a number! It is clear that Carolina Fertility Institute is truly a team. Every person works together with the shared goal of providing exceptional patient care, and it shows in every interaction. I am incredibly grateful for the care I have received so far and cannot wait to continue my journey with this amazing practice. Thank you all for making such an emotional experience one filled with hope, confidence, and compassion. Great Service: From the moment we walked through the doors, the atmosphere was warm, organized, and incredibly reassuring. They handle every detail with so much care, which takes a massive weight off your shoulders on such an emotional day. Great Team: The entire staff—the nurses, the embryologist, and the doctors—feels like a family that is entirely invested in your success. They were so patient, answered every single question, and made sure my partner and I felt supported, informed, and comfortable every step of the way. Great Treatment: The level of medical expertise here is top-notch. The procedure itself was smooth, calm, and handled with the utmost professionalism. Going through fertility treatments can be such a stressful journey, but CFI makes you feel like more than just a patient. They give you hope and treat you with genuine kindness. We are so incredibly grateful to the whole team!

I had a great experience at this clinic and will return for future fertility needs. We thought highly of the nurses and doctors, especially Dr. Mesen. I now have an almost 2.5 month old! Very thankful for their care.

If I could give 0 stars - that would be my rating. I am sharing concerns about my experience, particularly regarding organization, communication, and coordination of care during 2 IVF cycles in both December of 2025 and March 2026. Throughout my treatment, there were repeated breakdowns that made an already stressful process significantly more difficult. I experienced delays in receiving results on multiple occasions, including instances where results had been available for several days before being communicated to me. This has happened more than once. Additionally, I was contacted by different nurses regarding the same results, without awareness that the information had already been shared. This repeated lack of internal coordination has been frustrating and has me questioning my decision to choose them as my provider. During my second egg retrieval cycle, a change in my protocol was not communicated to me in advance, which left us completely confused on the day of the procedure. While the doctor did apologize—and I do appreciate that acknowledgment—the situation created unnecessary stress and has impacted my overall trust in the process and care team. I was also troubled by a recent interaction in which it was stated that we had already gone over the “most likely results,” suggesting that further discussion was unnecessary. Given the complexity and emotional weight of fertility treatment, that response felt dismissive and did not reflect the level of communication and support I expected. I entered this process fully aware of my prognosis and realistic about potential outcomes. However, I did not expect that to influence the level of communication, coordination, or attentiveness in my care. Unfortunately, my experience has left me with severe regret over choosing them as my clinic. Clear, timely, and coordinated communication is critical in a delicate process like IVF.

I have called on multiple occasions called and left messages requesting a refund for my consultation fee since this office can't see me until February 2021 and since my insurance won't cover the surgery. I can't wait 90 days to see a doctor for my particular case. This timeline was not given to me until I paid the money. I was told initially that the money would be refunded to my card. Later after calling about the refund repeatedly, I was told the company doesn’t issue refunds to credit cards. I have been calling since the first week of November. Why couldn't the money just be refunded to my card? I was told that they only mail checks out for refunds, no credit card refunds. This feels really sketchy to me. They demanded $240 over the phone to book the appointment and if you decide to cancel or not wait months to see a doctor, they refuse to refund your card . The timeline should have been given before the appointment was booked because I would have never agreed to those terms. This is an integrity issue for me that raises so many questions. Definitely not the spirit of excellence in customer service. Who knows with patient and embryo care... Response to Owner: The office could not tell me when my payment was mailed or the check number and to date it has not been received. Your response is not accurate. It is dismissive and without proper investigation. If the check was actually mailed, there would be no reason to not return my calls. I suspect that this isn't the first time this has happened, everyone is just too unbothered about this situation at Carolina's Fertility Clinic. I guess that everyone had lunch and a good laugh on me. No honest Abe's here.

We did one IVF cycle here with Dr. Messen and even though not successful Dr. Messen was great the whole time. I got to see him a lot compared to the other clinics I’ve been to where you hardly ever see a physician. He even called a few times to update me with things. He’s more straightforward but I would really recommend him. He went above and beyond to try and get a good outcome. The nurses were all wonderful and had superior communication also. He explained things slowly and took his time and I know IVF clinics stay very busy. The only issue with had was with the egg donor part of the clinic. The communication was not great at and took several days to hear back and lost out on a great egg donor. So I decided to go elsewhere but for regular IVF they were all great!

This was the worst experience in my life at a physician’s office. Dr. Mesen is by far the most unprofessional, inconsiderate, and impatient physician. Please do not take this review lightly. I left the visit feeling in complete violation. He was disinterested from the moment we stepped in his office. He spoke very rushed. He was negative the whole visit. He barely provided options only negative statistics. He even made it clear did not review my records because 50 pages long. I feel discrimination was a key factor and will be escalating my complaint and experience. My husband was disgusted. He maintained his composure during this horrific visit. The ultrasound room didn’t even have hand towels. My internal ultrasound was beyond uncomfortable. I felt the pressure even hours after the visit which is why I feel even more violated. This man should not be able to practice. As we waited to enter his office, he yelled back and forth from his office to the nurses giggling about being able to attend their cookout. Implying he would “fit in!” This entire experience was demeaning in every aspect. I regret spending anytime there. I’m going to ensure my insurance company does not satisfy their claim. I had to ask for options because he recommended none. He suggested removing my uterus??? I stated no I will remove the fibroids then he agreed???? Who is this guy? The most unprofessional and rudest physician I’ve ever encountered. Edit: This review was written mid morning. I was still anxious from my experience. Please think twice before utilizing this facility. The negative reviews are accurate in regard to Dr. Mesen. Update: After the experience at this office, I treated with Reproductive Specialists of the Carolinas. My baby is almost a toddler today. Please follow your gut and your heart. Try your best to not allow your vulnerability or emotions to settle for less than. Pursue the right facility and team to support your journey. If it doesn't feel right, it is not for you. 🙏🏽❤️🙌🏽
