About
Eric Forman holds two directorships at once. He is both Medical Director and Laboratory Director of Columbia University Fertility Center, and he carries an HCLD — High Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director — credential, the certification that makes a physician legally responsible for what happens on the embryology and andrology bench and not only in the clinic. Very few reproductive endocrinologists run both sides of an IVF program.
He earned his MD at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, and completed his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship with Rutgers and Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey. He is an Assistant Professor at Columbia, has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, and serves as an Associate Editor of Fertility and Sterility, one of the field’s leading journals — so the ART literature passes through his desk on both the writing and the reviewing side.
His published research centers on the lab-and-transfer decisions that shape IVF outcomes: preimplantation genetic testing, elective single-embryo transfer, and egg vitrification. Among that work is a randomized trial comparing transfer of a single genetically tested embryo against transfer of two untested embryos, reported to have influenced ASRM guidance on how many embryos to transfer, and a study on whether rapid vitrification harms egg genetics. Off the clock, he finished the 2016 New York City Marathon.
Clinical Expertise
- Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A): Research and clinical leadership on screening embryos for chromosome number, supported by Columbia’s in-house rapid testing
- Elective Single-Embryo Transfer (eSET): Protocols and published trials on transferring one embryo to cut multiples without lowering live-birth rates
- Egg and Embryo Vitrification: Fast-freeze methods studied for their effect on embryo genetics
- IVF and ICSI: Full-cycle care with simultaneous oversight of the embryology and andrology laboratory
- Fertility Preservation and Third-Party Reproduction: Egg freezing, donor egg and gestational-carrier programs
Why Choose Dr. Forman
One physician accountable for clinic and lab. The HCLD credential plus the dual directorship means the person managing your cycle is also the person responsible for the culture dishes, the freeze tanks and the genetic assay next door.
An Associate Editor of Fertility and Sterility. He reviews for a top reproductive-medicine journal while publishing 50-plus papers in it and others, so practice reflects current evidence.
Work that changed guidance. His randomized trial on single versus double embryo transfer is cited in connection with ASRM’s recommendations on embryo number, the difference between bench research and a policy effect.
