How Does BMI Affect Pregnancy?

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². It is the standard international index for judging whether weight sits in a healthy range; normal is 18.5–24.9.

A BMI under 18.5 can disrupt ovulation and cause infertility. At 25 or above, ovulation, conception, and pregnancy-complication risk are affected; at 30+, IVF success rates fall noticeably.

Before trying to conceive, aim for 18.5–24.9. With a BMI over 35, clinics may recommend weight loss before IVF, since obesity increases medication doses, retrieval difficulty, and pregnancy complication risk.

BMI is only a screening tool and does not capture overall health — muscular people can register high while being healthy. Consider it alongside body-fat percentage and waist circumference.

What Is the BMI Formula?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the internationally accepted measure for assessing whether your weight falls in a healthy range.

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Frequently Asked Questions

How does BMI affect pregnancy?
Both high and low BMI can affect ovulation, fertility, and the risk of pregnancy complications. Aim for a healthy range before trying to conceive.
Does a normal BMI guarantee fertility?
No. BMI is one factor among many — age, tubal function and sperm quality also matter.
What BMI is best for IVF?
A BMI of 18.5–30 is considered suitable for IVF. Above 35 clinics may ask you to lose weight first; below 18.5 you may need to gain.
How should I read my BMI when planning pregnancy?
Under 18.5 may impair ovulation; 18.5–24.9 is healthy for conception; 25–29.9 suggests modest weight loss; 30+ warrants a medical consultation.
