About
Dr. Mamie McLean is a reproductive endocrinologist at Alabama Fertility specializing in infertility evaluation and treatment, IVF, third-party reproduction, and recurrent pregnancy loss. She built her practice around long-term relationships with patients and families, and on walking couples through the hardest decisions in fertility care — donor eggs, embryo number, when to change course — in plain language.
She grew up in Athens, Georgia, and trained entirely in the Southeast: University of Virginia for undergrad, Medical College of Georgia for medical school, UNC Chapel Hill for Ob/Gyn residency, and UAB for her REI fellowship.
That fellowship turned into three years of faculty at UAB, where she directed the university’s oocyte donor program — donor screening and medical and genetic evaluation, recipient matching, and donor cycle management. Very few community practice physicians have run an academic donor program end to end; it is the backbone of the donor egg services Alabama Fertility offers today, both its in-house fresh donor program and frozen eggs from Fairfax EggBank. She has won multiple teaching awards and was named a Top Woman in Medicine by B Metro in 2017.
Clinical Expertise
- IVF with individualized stimulation: protocols built around age, ovarian reserve, and prior response — with specific experience in diminished reserve and poor responders
- Egg donation, fresh and frozen: donor selection, matching, cycle synchronization, and the trade-offs between an in-house fresh program and banked frozen eggs, explained with direct program-management experience
- Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL): systematic workup of karyotype, uterine anatomy, endocrine, and immune factors before treatment changes
- Third-party reproduction: donor egg and donor sperm pathways, including the medical and coordination side of legal agreements
- Fertility preservation: egg and embryo freezing counseling and execution
Why Choose Dr. McLean
Her three years directing UAB’s egg donor program mean a donor-egg patient is being seen by the person who built the matching pipeline, not just someone ordering from a catalog. She can lay out honestly when a fresh donor cycle is worth the coordination and when Fairfax EggBank’s tested, shippable frozen inventory is the faster, cheaper route.
For recurrent loss, her approach is a full differential: chromosome analysis, cavity assessment, and endocrine and immune workup, sequenced so you are not repeating tests you’ve already had. The same applies to low ovarian reserve — she adjusts the protocol to the patient’s numbers rather than running a standard dose and hoping.
Her teaching background shows up in appointments. She is known for making sure couples actually understand the decision tree they are on — a real difference when the next step involves donor gametes or a transfer number choice, and both partners need to be on the same page.

Suitable For
Donor egg patients — fresh or frozen, single-center or bank-sourced. Dr. McLean ran an academic donor program for three years and handles the medical matching, screening review, and cycle logistics personally.
Recurrent pregnancy loss — couples who have had two or more losses and want a structured workup (genetic, anatomic, endocrine, immune) before another attempt.
Diminished ovarian reserve and advanced maternal age — low AMH, few antral follicles, or prior poor response. She plans mild or modified stimulation around your actual numbers instead of defaulting to a high-dose protocol.
LGBTQ+ families and single parents by choice — donor sperm and donor egg paths for female couples and solo parents, managed within a practice that routinely handles third-party reproduction.
