About

About

Volume is a clinical asset in third-party reproduction, and Bradford Kolb has more of it than almost anyone in his region. His HRC Pasadena practice is described as one of the largest providers of egg donation and surrogacy in the United States, and under his direction the group’s donor-cycle pregnancy rates improved. Donor matching, screening, cycle synchronization, laboratory logistics and parentage paperwork are processes that either break or bend depending on how many times a team has run them. His has run them for thirty years, with patients flying in from other countries specifically for these programs.

His route into that work was partly commercial: after UC Irvine for undergraduate, medical school and clinical training, plus residency at Northwestern and an REI fellowship at USC, he earned an MBA at UCLA’s Anderson School. He has since pushed two things into the same pipeline — assisted reproduction and technology. He helped develop and implement genetic screening of embryos for clinical use and contributed to new laboratory methods, and more recently has worked to bring machine learning into reproductive medicine, an effort aimed at embryo selection and at lowering the cost per live birth.

The advocacy side is formalized rather than rhetorical. In 2010 he founded Love Comes First, a nonprofit dedicated to LGBTQ+ family building, and he created a program for HIV-discordant couples seeking biological children using sperm washing and ART. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers and abstracts and lectured on five continents; the profession has recognized him with the Resolve Excellence Award (a patient-advocacy honor in reproductive medicine) and the CREOG National Teaching Award from residency educators. Pasadena Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine and the Los Angeles Times name him a top doctor annually. He consults in English, with office staff supporting Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Russian.

Clinical Expertise

  • Donor egg IVF: donor recruitment and screening, matching, endometrial and donor cycle synchronization, transfer planning — the highest-volume part of his practice
  • Gestational carrier programs: intended-parent screening, carrier selection and medical management, contract coordination with California family-law counsel, and prenatal parentage orders under Family Code §§7960-7962
  • LGBTQ+ family building: reciprocal IVF for female couples, donor sperm and donor egg paths for gay male couples, and multi-parent counseling
  • HIV-discordant reproduction: sperm washing and ART protocols allowing biological parenthood without transmission risk (HART program)
  • PGT-A and PGT-M: embryo genetic screening and single-gene testing for chromosomal or heritable conditions, in a program where he helped bring the technology to clinical use
  • Complex infertility: repeated implantation failure, advanced maternal age, diminished ovarian reserve, severe male factor
  • Fertility preservation and egg freezing: banking cycles for medical and elective indications
  • AI and technology in ART: machine-learning embryo assessment and cost-reduction work, currently part of his research agenda

Why Choose Dr. Kolb

The learning curve on donor cycles is already behind him. Donor-egg and gestational-carrier cycles have far more moving parts than a standard IVF cycle, and complications are usually logistical or legal rather than biological. A program doing this at national scale has solved most of those failure modes already.

He has a business degree and uses it. An UCLA MBA is unusual on a fertility physician’s CV, and it correlates with what he works on now: cost reduction, technology adoption and access. Ask him what a PGT cycle actually buys per dollar; that is his research question, not an afterthought.

Awards from both the patient and teacher sides of the field. The Resolve Excellence Award comes from an infertility patient-advocacy organization; the CREOG National Teaching Award comes from residency educators. Different constituencies, same physician.

He created a path for HIV-positive fathers wanting biological children. The HART program and the Love Comes First nonprofit, founded 2010, are infrastructure rather than statements of openness — which is the difference between “we don’t turn people away” and “we built a service.”

Lab-side involvement in genetic screening. He helped implement embryo genetic testing and new laboratory technology, so PGT recommendations come from someone who watched the method arrive, not only someone who reads the report.

Professional Affiliations

Member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society. More than 60 peer-reviewed papers and abstracts; faculty and invited lectures on five continents. Founder of Love Comes First (2010).

Suitable For

Patients who need a donor egg program with real throughput. Screening capacity, matched-donor availability and scheduling maturity are the difference between a cycle this quarter and one next year.

Intended parents working with a gestational carrier. Legal and medical coordination at a practice that handles these cases continuously in the most surrogacy-friendly state in the country.

LGBTQ+ family builders, including reciprocal IVF and donor-gamete paths. The founder of a nonprofit on this exact subject, with an established program rather than an ad hoc accommodation.

HIV-discordant couples. A dedicated sperm-washing and ART pathway for biological parenthood.

Families with a known genetic condition. PGT-M coordination from a physician who helped bring embryo genetic screening into clinical use.

Patients who have failed transfers elsewhere and want the technology questions asked. AI-based embryo selection and lab-method review are part of his current work.

Best For

Donor egg and gestational carrier programs, including international patients LGBTQ+ family building and reciprocal IVF Complex cases: repeated implantation failure, advanced maternal age, diminished reserve Families needing embryo genetic testing for a known hereditary condition HIV-discordant couples pursuing biological parenthood
