About
Alan B. Copperman did not join RMA of New York — he started it. He founded the practice in 2001 and runs it today as Managing Director and CEO, which makes him the rare fertility specialist whose signature is on both the protocols and the institution that produces them. Before the clinic existed he had already finished an OB/GYN residency at Yale University School of Medicine (1990) and a reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and he has stayed inside the Mount Sinai system ever since: he directs its Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and holds a clinical professorship in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science there.
The throughline of his published work is measurement rather than anecdote. His materials list more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and scientific abstracts, concentrated on egg freezing, preimplantation genetics and data-driven patient care, and he has been quoted on fertility topics by the Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News & World Report and The New York Times. Crain’s New York Business named him one of its 2022 Notable Health Care Leaders.
He sees patients at the Manhattan East Side office, where his clinical work still centers on the cases other programs hand off: repeated IVF failure, fertility preservation, and genetic risk in embryos.
Clinical Expertise
- IVF cycle management: designs stimulation and transfer strategy for patients who have already failed cycles elsewhere, which is where most of his published writing sits
- Egg and embryo freezing: his core research area; he built the program at a clinic he founded rather than inheriting one
- Preimplantation genetic testing: author of work on embryo genetics and its use in counseling decisions
- Program leadership: he founded this practice in 2001 and still carries its clinical title list, so protocol decisions and institutional decisions come from the same person
- Data-first counseling: his stated approach is to give patients the numbers behind a recommendation, including the unflattering ones
Why Choose Dr. Copperman
He built the lab and the protocols he practices on. A founder-CEO who still takes patients is unusual; the 2001 founding date and the current CEO title are the same person on the same page.
The publication record is the whole career, not a line item. More than 500 papers, chapters and abstracts on fertility preservation, egg donation and genetics, per his own faculty profile.
He teaches the specialty he exams. Division Director and Clinical Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine, so the fellows training under him are trained to his standard.
Recognized outside the operating room. Crain’s 2022 Notable Health Care Leader, and a regular source for national press on fertility treatment.
Professional Affiliations
Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Fellow of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine; member of the American Medical Association, the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists and the New York Society of Reproductive Medicine. He has served on the board of directors of RESOLVE, the national infertility organization, which is where his advocacy work shows up. His faculty page records the Mount Sinai clinical professorship and division directorship.
Suitable For
- Patients with repeated IVF failures: the group his practice has accumulated the most published experience in
- Anyone freezing eggs or embryos before starting treatment: fertility preservation is his named research area, not an add-on service
- Couples facing a known genetic condition and weighing PGT: he writes about embryo genetics and the counseling that surrounds it
- Patients who want the evidence behind a recommendation: he is on record that treatment decisions should be made with the data visible
