About
Dr. Andrea Peterson’s son was conceived by IVF at the same clinic where she now works. She went through the evaluation, the stimulation and the transfer as a patient at Coastal Fertility Specialists before joining its physician team in the fall of 2023, which is an unusually concrete basis for explaining a cycle calendar to a nervous first-time patient.
She is also from the state she treats — raised in Columbia, South Carolina, educated at the College of Charleston Honors College, then MD and MS in Clinical Research at the Medical University of South Carolina, where her peers inducted her into the Gold Humanism Honor Society for compassionate care. Her residency took her to the University of Texas Southwestern / Parkland Hospital in Dallas, one of the highest-volume OB/GYN training programs in the country, followed by a three-year REI fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.
Her research sits at the intersection of language and fertility outcomes. Work on health care disparities and how a patient’s language preference affects intrauterine insemination results was published in Fertility and Sterility; a second study, on body mass index and live birth rates after frozen-thawed euploid transfer using SART national registry data, has been submitted to the same journal. She is of Puerto Rican heritage, treats in Spanish as well as English, and has presented at the annual meetings of both the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She lives on Daniel Island with her husband, their son, and two golden retrievers.
One credential detail matters if you are comparing physicians: Peterson is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the ABOG and is board-eligible in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility — fellowship-trained and practicing full-scope REI, with subspecialty certification still in progress.
Clinical Expertise
- IUI and ovulation induction: the treatment line her published outcomes research examines, including how language and communication affect results
- In Vitro Fertilization: stimulation, monitoring and transfer, with clinical-research training behind the protocol decisions
- Frozen embryo transfer counseling: SART-registry analysis of BMI and live birth after frozen-thawed euploid transfer
- Spanish-language reproductive care: consultation, consent and cycle teaching conducted in Spanish, without an interpreter in the room
- Access and disparities in fertility treatment: the through-line of her published and presented work
Why Choose Dr. Andrea Peterson
She has sat in the waiting room on the other side. Her son was created by IVF at Coastal Fertility Specialists, an experience she describes openly and cites as the reason her view of the work changed.
Care in your language, not through a third party. Few reproductive endocrinologists in the Lowcountry will take a Spanish-language history, explain a stimulation plan and review a scan in Spanish.
A research record tied to the treatments she prescribes. Her Fertility and Sterility publication is about IUI outcomes in patients with a language preference; her submitted work uses SART registry data on frozen transfers — both directly relevant to the cycles she runs.
Training at a high-volume residency and a New York REI fellowship. Parkland Hospital’s OB/GYN program and Einstein/Montefiore, followed by an MS in Clinical Research earned at MUSC.
