About

About

The uterus is where IVF cycles fail quietly. David Huang’s research is aimed squarely at that: as an ABOG/AAOGF fellow he used single-cell sequencing to study the human endometrium, the tissue an embryo has to attach to, at the resolution of individual cells rather than a biopsy average. His clinical answer to the same problem is a scope. He holds the Society for Reproductive Surgeons’ award for outstanding performance in hysteroscopy, the procedure used to find and remove polyps, adhesions and septa before a transfer is attempted.

He is one of the few UCSF reproductive endocrinologists who treats infertility medically and surgically in the same practice, and one of the few who does it in Mandarin. He earned a degree in biological sciences at Carnegie Mellon, his medical degree at Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School, then completed both obstetrics and gynecology residency and REI fellowship at UCSF — the same training pipeline the center sends its own fellows through. Along the way he took additional scientific training through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Marine Biological Laboratory, the summer research programs that function as credentials in reproductive biology.

At the Center for Reproductive Health his day-to-day work is stimulation and retrieval cycles, fertility preservation counseling for patients about to start cancer treatment, and cavity surgery for patients whose imaging shows a reason a previous transfer did not take. He works with LGBTQ+ patients building families through donor sperm, donor eggs, reciprocal IVF and gestational carriers.

Clinical Expertise

  • IVF and ICSI cycle management: individualized stimulation, monitoring, retrieval and transfer, including patients with repeated implantation failure
  • Hysteroscopic surgery: adhesiolysis for Asherman syndrome, polypectomy, submucosal fibroid resection and septum division, performed by an award-winning surgeon in the society that trains people to do it
  • Infertility of mixed cause: ovulatory, tubal, endometriosis-related and unexplained subfertility, evaluated internally and surgically rather than through two separate referrals
  • Fertility preservation: egg and embryo freezing for oncology and other iatrogenic indications, coordinated with the center’s preservation line
  • Endometrial and implantation assessment: the research question translated into how he reads a thin lining or a failed cycle
  • Mandarin-language consultations and LGBTQ+ family building as standing parts of the practice

Why Choose Dr. David Huang

A surgical award from the surgeons’ society. The Society for Reproductive Surgeons recognized his hysteroscopy performance specifically — the procedure most often the difference between a cavity that will not hold an embryo and one that will.

He studies the tissue he operates on. Single-cell sequencing of the endometrium is not a side hobby; it is the same question as whether a given uterus is receptive, asked with different tools. Conference-level recognition — ASRM Prize Paper and Prize Poster — tracks how that work has been received.

Care in Mandarin. For Chinese-speaking patients in the Bay Area, cycle timing, medication instructions and consent conversations are exact in their own language, which removes the interpreter’s rounding error from decisions with irreversible consequences.

One physician for the medical and surgical halves of a workup, inside an academic center where the pathology, genetics and oncology teams are down the hall.

Professional Affiliations

Suitable For

  • Patients with a uterine cavity finding: adhesions, polyps, submucosal fibroids or a septum that needs diagnosing and treating before transfer
  • Repeated implantation failure: the endometrium is the question, and it is the one he researches
  • Mandarin-speaking patients, whether Bay Area residents or coming from abroad for treatment
  • Cancer patients on a clock: fertility preservation coordinated with the oncology teams at UCSF Medical Center
