About

About

Seth Derman spent years as the only reproductive endocrinologist in a Princeton, New Jersey practice, which is a specific kind of job description: no one to hand a difficult responder to, no one to delegate a strange ultrasound to, one physician carrying a couple from the first consultation through the pregnancy test. That is still how the clinic introduces him — relationship-focused, guiding patients through evaluation, treatment and the decisions in between — and it is why patients who hate being passed between departments look for him.

The credentials behind that style were set early. After a biology degree at Rutgers University and medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, he trained in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University / St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, where the faculty chose him as Administrative Chief Resident and he took the award for the highest score on the CREOG in-service examination. He completed his reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship at the University of Maryland, then went into private practice. He has been named a Castle Connolly Top Regional Doctor in Reproductive Endocrinology every year since 2015 and selected by Inside Jersey Magazine, and he served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

At New Direction he sees patients in Gilbert, where the practice lists his clinical focus as comprehensive fertility care and reproductive surgery. He has lectured and published on topics in reproductive medicine; our sources do not give a publication count, so ask the office for his curriculum vitae if you want the list.

Clinical Expertise

  • Fertility evaluation: history, ovarian reserve testing, imaging of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, semen analysis, and a plain-language readout of what the findings do and do not explain
  • IVF cycle management: stimulation with injectable medication, monitoring by blood work and ultrasound, retrieval, fertilization in the on-site laboratory, and transfer timed to your response rather than to a fixed template
  • Reproductive surgery: hysteroscopic and laparoscopic treatment of uterine and tubal pathology — polyps, fibroids, adhesions — that would otherwise blunt a transfer’s chances
  • IUI and donor insemination: for unexplained infertility, mild male factor, cervical factors, and single patients or couples using donor sperm
  • Ovulation and endocrine disorders: PCOS, thyroid disease and abnormal uterine bleeding managed alongside fertility treatment
  • Continuity of care: the same physician who set the protocol performs the procedures and reviews the monitoring, which is the practice model New Direction states as its standard

Why Choose Dr. Derman

Trained by the people who pick the chief resident. Columbia’s faculty selected him as Administrative Chief Resident, a role that is about running a service and teaching on it, and the CREOG in-service exam award means he out-scored his cohort on the national exam residents in that specialty sit.

A single-physician practice built his judgment. Being the only fertility specialist in a New Jersey group is not a smaller caseload; it is a bigger decision load. Patients describe exactly what that produces — the clinic’s own review page quotes a patient who had one healthy embryo after her first retrieval and transferred successfully with him.

Recognized by name and by year, repeatedly. Castle Connolly Top Regional Doctor in Reproductive Endocrinology annually since 2015, plus an Inside Jersey Magazine top-doctor selection. Neither is a registry outcome, but the consistency over a decade is the peer-side signal.

He still teaches. A Clinical Assistant Professor post at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, with lectures and published articles in reproductive medicine, and governance experience on the board of the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society and the clinical governance board of one of New Jersey’s largest OB/GYN groups.

Suitable For

  • Patients who want one physician throughout: consultation, stimulation decisions, retrieval and transfer in the same hands, which is the model he practiced for years as a group’s only specialist
  • Anyone at the evaluation stage: a workup before a treatment recommendation, in a clinic that says it will tell you when testing or add-ons are not worth your money
  • Uterine or tubal factors: polyps, fibroids, adhesions or endometriosis where surgery comes before transfer
  • IVF patients whose response keeps changing: protocols here are adjusted to your follicles and lining, on a monthly cycle calendar with fixed start and cutoff dates
  • Second opinions: patients arriving from another clinic with a plan they cannot explain, or a set of results nobody walked them through

Best For

A full fertility evaluation before anyone proposes a treatment IVF with a protocol adjusted as you respond Reproductive surgery for uterine or tubal factors One physician staying with the case from consultation through transfer A second opinion after treatment elsewhere
