About
Fertility clinics usually split the job: one doctor manages your cycles, another — or a hospital you’ve never met — performs your surgery. Dr. Lauren Murphy collapses that split. As Director of the Surgery Center of Waltham, she runs Boston IVF’s dedicated surgical facility where patients’ procedures happen, and she still carries fertility patients in clinic at the Brookline and Quincy centers.
Her training explains the comfort with both. She graduated with honors from Trinity College, earned her MD at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, completed OB/GYN residency at Weill Cornell / New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, and finished her REI fellowship at Harvard Medical School / Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She is double board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The human side of that technical résumé is formally recognized: she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2011 and received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in 2016 — national honors given to physicians whose patients describe them as compassionate listeners, not just skilled operators. Her research includes the frequently cited 2019 Human Reproduction paper proposing a framework for deciding when PGT-A embryo testing actually helps a given patient (“to test or not to test”).
Clinical Expertise
- Reproductive and Gynecologic Surgery: Directs the center where Boston IVF patients’ operations are performed — the clinic’s OR capability is part of her job description
- IVF Cycle Management: Stimulation, monitoring, retrieval and transfer with surgical backup in the same physician
- ICSI: Lab-side fertilization technique for male factor cases
- PGT-A Decision Counseling: Co-author of the “to test or not to test” framework for aneuploidy screening
- Fertility Preservation: Egg and embryo freezing within a surgical practice familiar with the timing pressure oncology creates
Why Choose Dr. Lauren Murphy
One physician through clinic and operating room. Patients who need a polyp removed, an endometrioma addressed or a difficult retrieval planned don’t get handed off — the surgery center’s director is already their doctor.
Humanism awards that mean something. The Leonard Tow award and Gold Humanism induction are chosen on patient-reported qualities: listening, honesty, presence. In a treatment defined by scans and injections, that’s the differentiator patients mention.
Ivy-adjacent training pipeline. Cornell residency, Harvard fellowship — and now she directs the facility where that program’s private-practice work gets done.
She publishes on the tests you’re being offered. Her PGT-A counseling framework exists precisely because clinics oversell embryo testing.

Suitable For
- IVF patients with surgical findings: Fibroids, polyps, adhesions or endometriosis that need fixing before transfer
- Anatomy-complicated retrievals: A director-level surgeon managing your cycle
- Patients weighing PGT-A costs: Evidence-based counseling from one of the framework’s authors
