About
Lawrence Werlin helped bring preimplantation genetic diagnosis to Southern California, and for close to a decade he ran the committee that decides whether IVF clinics are allowed to say what they say about their own results. As chairman of the SART Validation Committee, he audited the success-rate claims of clinics across the country — a role that only makes sense for someone who has spent four decades building programs himself.
That is the arc of his career. He has practiced reproductive endocrinology in Orange County since 1982, is on the clinical faculty of UC Irvine’s REI division, and holds an NIH National Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine. He founded Hoag Memorial Hospital’s fertility service in 1986 and directed it until 1995, then founded Coastal Fertility Medical Center, which now operates within HRC Fertility at Newport Beach. He has been the principal investigator on three major PGD studies.
His awards track longevity rather than a single breakthrough: named to Best Doctors in America for 24 consecutive years, Orange Coast Magazine Top Doctor from 1996 to 2022, and the ASRM Research Star Award in 2014.
Clinical Expertise
- PGD and PGT-A: One of the physicians who introduced embryo genetic diagnosis to the region, as PI on three landmark studies
- Complex IVF and Recurrent Failure: Evaluation and re-protocoling for patients who have not succeeded after multiple cycles
- Minimal and Natural-Cycle IVF: Lighter stimulation approaches for selected patients
- Program Design: Built two hospital- and center-level fertility programs from the ground up, including lab and validation standards
Why Choose Dr. Werlin
He wrote the guardrails. Chairing the SART validation committee for nearly ten years means he has scrutinized outcome claims from the auditor’s side, not just the marketing side.
Four decades of Orange County practice. Continuous clinical work since 1982, with 24 straight years on Best Doctors in America.
A builder. Coastal Fertility Medical Center and the Hoag fertility service both exist because he founded them — PGD in Southern California advanced in part through his studies.
