About
Lora Shahine runs Pacific Northwest Fertility’s Center for Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, and she has written the book on the subject — Not Broken: An Approachable Guide to Miscarriage and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, a bestseller aimed at patients rather than clinicians. Her stated work is teaching, advocating for patient care, and breaking down the stigma that still sits around miscarriage.
She joined PNWF in 2009 and is a clinical associate professor at the University of Washington, where she teaches OB/GYN residents alongside her work at the Swedish residency program. She is double board-certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her fellowship took her to Stanford, where she served as a Clinical Instructor in the OB/GYN department, published on fertility and recurrent miscarriage, and finished the program with awards in both research and teaching. Before that she completed her residency at UCSF, collecting a teaching award and the Jim Green Award for outstanding research and clinical achievement, and she earned her medical degree at Wake Forest University after a Bachelor of Science at Georgetown.
The third part of her practice happens in public. She has published more than 75 peer-reviewed research projects, contributes to the New York Times and the Washington Post, and hosts the Baby or Bust fertility podcast, with educational content across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok that she puts at roughly three million people reached per month. She has served as past president of both ASRM’s Early Pregnancy Loss Association and its Social Media Special Interest Group, and sits on the boards of the Babyquest Fertility Grant Association and Doctors for Fertility. Her second book, Planting the Seeds of Pregnancy: An Integrative Approach to Fertility Care, covers the complementary side of the work.

- Integrative Fertility Care: Author of a book on bringing integrative approaches into fertility treatment without abandoning ART
- IVF and Reproductive Endocrinology: Double board-certified; causes of infertility and cycle management
- Research in Miscarriage and Fertility: 75+ peer-reviewed projects, with fellowship and residency research awards behind her
Why Choose Dr. Lora Shahine
She trains in a rare model. Workup for recurrent loss crosses reproductive endocrinology, immunology and coagulation, anatomy, endocrine metabolism and genetics, and few programs teach all of it together. Her Stanford fellowship ran inside one of the country’s few multidisciplinary recurrent pregnancy loss programs, and she now runs that service at PNWF.
She publishes in this specific area. Her research output concentrates on fertility and recurrent miscarriage, recognized while she was still in training — the Jim Green Award at UCSF, an annual faculty award for outstanding research in women’s health, and research and teaching awards at the close of her Stanford fellowship. She went on to lead ASRM’s Early Pregnancy Loss Association.
She writes for patients, and she answers in public media. Not Broken exists because the information on miscarriage workup is scattered and clinical. She contributes to the New York Times and Washington Post, which usually means she was asked for a professional reading of a story about miscarriage or fertility treatment.
She carries a second lane without losing the first. Planting the Seeds of Pregnancy deals with integrative care, but her framing stays evidence-led and inside IVF practice rather than replacing it. For patients already in a cycle who want lifestyle and psychological support planned alongside it, that combination is unusual.
She teaches residents. A clinical associate professor at the University of Washington who teaches in the Swedish OB/GYN program and has won teaching awards at two institutions — a doctor whose routine work includes explaining the reasoning behind a protocol out loud.

- Two or more losses, no explanation yet: The center she directs exists for exactly this workup, and her training was multidisciplinary
- Miscarriage in early pregnancy, unsure what comes next: Her book is a patient guide to the tests and treatments in this window
- Repeated implantation failure plus loss: Embryo quality, endometrium and immune/coagulation factors have to be read together; that intersection is her specialty
- Patients who want integrative support alongside IVF: The subject of her second book, approached from inside fertility practice
- Patients who arrive with their own reading done: Her podcast and short-form content already cover most common questions, so the appointment can spend time on your numbers
