About
From 2011 to 2013 Dr. Paul R. Shin sat on the executive board of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction, and he built the scientific program for that society’s 2012 annual meeting. Chairing a national program means reading most of the submissions in the field before anyone else does. He still sits inside that machinery — on the Board of Directors of its successor society, the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology, as Member-at-Large; on the Urology Care Foundation’s Reproductive and Sexual Health Committee since 2014; and on the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Continuing Medical Education Committee since 2014.
Shin is a urologist, not an obstetrician-gynecologist, which is precisely why he matters in an IVF practice: he is board certified in urology and directs Shady Grove Fertility’s reproductive urology. His route ran through the University of Virginia, where he earned his medical degree after a biology degree with distinction, a year of general surgery internship at Emory University Hospitals and Clinics in Atlanta, urology residency back at Virginia, and then male infertility fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s Glickman Urological Institute. He joined the practice in 2015.
Infertility is not only a female diagnosis, and for many couples a semen analysis is the beginning and end of the male workup. Shin handles what comes after that: hormonal evaluation, genetic causes of low or absent sperm, obstruction, varicocele, and the surgical retrieval of sperm when the ejaculate contains none. He practices at Rockville along with the practice’s Frederick and Washington, D.C. offices (K Street and the Sibley Hospital campus) and its Wexford, Pennsylvania site.
Clinical Expertise
- Azoospermia evaluation and management: distinguishing obstructive from non-obstructive causes, and the hormonal and genetic workup that decides whether retrieval is realistic
- Microsurgical sperm retrieval: testicular and epididymal extraction of sperm for use with ICSI
- Microsurgical vasectomy reversal and vasoepididymostomy for obstruction
- Microsurgical varicocele repair, offered as an alternative or precursor to IVF in selected men
- Male factor infertility in IVF/ICSI cycles: the laboratory-side decisions that follow from a semen analysis
- Sexual health and androgen management in men whose reproductive plans collide with a medical problem
Why Choose Dr. Paul Shin
He is the urologist. In a practice built around reproductive endocrinologists, a board-certified urologist with a male-infertility fellowship means the male partner is treated by a surgeon rather than handed a lab slip.
Program chair and board member of the national male reproduction society. Not membership alone — he set the 2012 SSMR scientific program and served on its executive board, and he currently sits on the SMRU board.
Committee work that outlasts any single award. Urology Care Foundation Reproductive and Sexual Health Committee and ASRM Continuing Medical Education Committee, both since 2014, plus the ASRM Traveling Fellowship Award in 2001.
Recognized regionally for close to twenty years. Washingtonian’s Top Doctor in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017-2019 and 2023-2026, with Hall of Fame induction in 2026; Castle Connolly Top Doctor 2022-2026; Northern Virginia Magazine Top Doctor 2022-2023.
Couples get evaluated in one place. His appointments sit inside a practice that runs semen analysis, ICSI and the embryology laboratory in the same building.
Patient review: “Dr. Shin was hands down one of the best doctors I’ve ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Dr. Shin took the time to address all my concerns, and he did so with excellent bedside manner.”
