About

About POMA Fertility

POMA Fertility describes itself as the only multi-provider, multi-location, privately owned fertility clinic in the Pacific Northwest. Its main campus is in Kirkland, Washington (12039 NE 128th St), with a satellite office in Bellingham. The name POMA comes from the pomegranate — its seeds have long been considered “seeds of fertility,” and that inspiration runs through the clinic’s branding and design.

The practice was founded in 2013 by Dr. Michael Opsahl, and Dr. Ronald Beesley has served as Medical Director since 2021. According to the clinic, the POMA team has worked together for 13 years and has helped more than 2,000 families build their families.

Per the SART 2023 Final report, POMA’s registration completed 1,059 cycles, with cumulative live birth rates of 63.0% for patients under 35 (national row 53.2%), 46.5% at ages 35-37 (39.9%) and 37.4% at ages 38-40 (26.2%). Those three bands sit above the SART 2023 national summary; the oldest band does not — POMA reports 7.1% for patients over 40 against a national 9.4%. Scope matters when reading those numbers: Kirkland and Bellingham file as one SART reporting unit, so the 1,059 cycles and every rate above describe both offices together rather than Kirkland alone. The clinic publishes its SART report link directly on its website and emphasizes transparent, personalized care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Why Choose POMA Fertility

Only Multi-Location Private Fertility Clinic in the Pacific Northwest POMA brings together multiple physicians across two locations, giving patients access to collaborative specialist care with the convenience of Kirkland (main) and Bellingham (satellite) offices.

Success Rates Above the National Average Per the SART 2023 Final report, POMA’s cumulative live birth rates — 63.0% under 35, 46.5% at 35-37, 37.4% at 38-40 — exceed the national averages (53.2%/39.9%/26.2%).

Transparent Pricing with a Refund Program All cycle prices are published on the website, and the POMACare IVF Refund Program offers 30%-90% refund tiers based on medical history — reducing the financial risk of treatment with just a single initial cycle.

On-site Embryology Lab and Expert Team POMA operates an on-site embryology lab with liquid nitrogen storage, directed by an ABB-certified HCLD laboratory director. Patient reviews frequently highlight the clinic’s “expert embryology department.”

Military Family Friendly A 25% discount on qualifying self-pay cycle packages is offered to active or retired US military and reservists, along with an oncofertility discount for patients preserving fertility before cancer treatment.

  2. Diagnostic Testing: if you choose to proceed, the team schedules diagnostic testing — blood work and possibly ultrasound for women; blood work and semen analysis for men.
  3. Follow-up Consultation: after results are ready, a follow-up appointment reviews findings and recommended treatment.
  4. Personalized Treatment Plan: build a plan ranging from fertility preservation to advanced IVF-assisted reproduction.
  5. Financial Planning: the finance team walks through costs, insurance, and financing options (CapexMD / Future Family / POMACare refund program / military discount) during the consultation or treatment.
  6. Start Treatment: begin your cycle with monitoring, retrieval, and transfer as planned. Appointments can be scheduled online or by phone.

Washington State is one of the more fertility-friendly states in the US. State law requires qualifying group insurance plans to cover infertility diagnosis and treatment (RCW 48.43 et al.), with some employer plans including IVF coverage. Egg and sperm donation are legal, and POMA operates its own egg bank with a public donor recruitment program. Gestational surrogacy is supported under Washington case law, and POMA explicitly supports patients using gestational carriers. LGBTQ+ family building is protected under Washington law, and POMA maintains a dedicated LGBTQIA+ services page. PGT-based family balancing is available in Washington, and POMA offers this service.

Graduated from POMA today after a successful first embryo transfer, and we couldn’t be more grateful. The entire team - from front desk, finance, nurses, to doctors - has been compassionate, knowledgeable, and supportive every step of the way. Thank you for making such a complex and emotional journey feel so much easier. Now we’re counting down the months until we get to meet our little one. Thank you, POMA, for helping make our dream come true. 💝

POMA was our answer and the path that led us to become parents. We are so grateful that places like this exist, and that there are individuals who genuinely want to help people like my husband and me. Without this clinic, we wouldn’t be experiencing the blessing of parenthood. Every single day, we are grateful we came to POMA from another local clinic. Infertility and the IVF process are stressful and sometimes daunting. There were certainly times during our five transfers when I lost hope. However, the nurses, staff, and especially Megan, Dr. Opsahl, and Beesley never did—and that spoke volumes to me. The portal can be frustrating, but that frustration came from my own anxiety and desire for immediate answers. None of it was the clinic’s fault or responsibility. Everything they did was timely, accurate, and handled with care. Frankly, I’m grateful they put up with me. We didn’t have a smooth, clear-cut path to our finish line. We went through five transfers, and I suffered a loss that was immensely painful. Without POMA, I would have never had the courage to continue—or be holding my one-year-old today. My advice to others searching for a clinic is to read these reviews. There isn’t another clinic with outcomes like this or one as dedicated as the doctors, nurses, and staff here. Going through this process can be hard, but you will get the support and care you need. You aren’t just another number or a check—they truly care, and you will see it

POMA is a place our family will FOREVER hold close to our hearts. Because of there hard work and amazing staff, my husband and I were able to welcome not one, but four babies into our lives! Our family is now colmplete and we give all the credit to POMA. Our most recent pregnancy was nothing more than a miracle. My husband and I were lucky enough to have had two successful pregnancies with POMA, and we thought why not try one last time for a third pregnancy, and maybe get the baby boy of our dreams after being blessed with 2 daughters. This last attempt at a third pregnancy came with very low odds. Our chances couldn't have been lower. Nothing really worked in our favor this last go around, but Dr. Opsal said, "Why not try. You're here, and even though the numbers aren't great, let's just give it a shot." And let me tell you, a miracle happened that day, because not only did we get pregnant, we got pregnant with twins. TWINS! We welcomed another baby girl, and the little boy of our dreams on 02/16/26. It's all because POMA and its staff handles every situation with care, compassion, a treatment plan designed for your individual needs, and most importantly, a positive environment with a can do attitude. Thank you isn't the right word for what I would like to say to the staff at POMA. There isn't a word good enough. It's my honor to right them a stellar review and I couldn't recommend them enough. Give POMA a shot, what do you have to lose!

Our experience with Dr. Beesley and most of the staff was pleasant. Dr. Opsahl was a different story. It was obvious he did not review my chart prior to any appointment. Each time, I would have to remind him that I had one ovary. For the amount of $$ you're spending at these clinics, a quick glance at the chart is expected. We also had some mis-scheduled appointments. We were traveling from Yakima, so when appointments were mis-scheduled, it was frustrating, time-consuming, and costly. The 2nd time, I brought it up with Dr. Opsahl, thinking he should know that his clinic was not functioning as well as it could be and mistakes were being made. His response was to call me a liar and blame me for the scheduling mistakes. I did not decide when I was to come in; his staff did. I had even questioned the appointment because it seemed too early from what we had previously discussed, but the person I was speaking with had told us to come in. Going to a fertility clinic is a fragile time in anyone's life. You're extremely vulnerable, and you can often feel less-than and incapable as a woman. As "professionals" who work in this field, you would think this would be taken into consideration when dealing with this kind of clientele. I was instead treated poorly and extremely unprofessionally. I am not convinced we need these clinics just because we are in our 40's, ladies, despite what medical is telling us. We ended up getting pregnant on our own, naturally, and peacefully. It is possible!

I cannot recommend POMA enough. The team is compassionate, thoughtful, and truly excellent at what they do. The facilities are beautiful, but what stands out most is the level of care. After a canceled IVF cycle due to low response that unexpectedly converted to IUI, I am now pregnant. I came to POMA after a failed IVF cycle elsewhere. While IVF outcomes are never guaranteed, how a clinic treats you absolutely matters. At POMA, I never felt like an inconvenience. I felt supported, respected, and genuinely cared for during one of the most vulnerable times of my life. They combine strong clinical expertise with humanity — which makes all the difference. If you’re feeling unsure about your current clinic, know that there are excellent, caring options out there. I’m so grateful I found them. They will forever be part of my journey.

So, I think the medical team and nurse are amazing. Update: when you start your cycle, the communication becomes much smoother and ideal My only issue is with the portal and communication. Its a bit hard to follow the process and it doesn't have a direct reply and I don't receive any reminders about appointments and also there are multiple portals for various things. I think if they use another portal that can handle appointments, courses, and patient portal and reminder all in one place, everything will be much more smoother.

The entire staff is wonderful and welcoming. A special shout-out to Dr. Messelt—she is truly amazing. She is so compassionate and takes the time to explain everything thoroughly, which made me feel completely at ease.
