About Gratia Medical Centre
Founded in 2007 in Central on Hong Kong Island, Gratia Medical Centre grew out of the Hong Kong Reproductive Health Centre. It is doctor-led and focused on women’s reproductive health, bringing fertility treatment together with gynaecology, obstetrics, surgery, Chinese medicine, counselling and nutrition in one clinic. The centre reports more than 18 years of experience in reproductive medicine in Hong Kong.
Its affiliated Hong Kong Assisted Reproduction Centre (HKARC) was established in 2011 and received a treatment licence from Hong Kong’s Reproductive Technology Council (CHRT) in 2012. IVF, ICSI, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) and the freezing of eggs, sperm and embryos are carried out at this licensed centre, so an entire cycle can be completed in Hong Kong.
The clinical team spans reproductive medicine specialists, obstetricians and gynaecologists, and a surgeon specialising in breast surgery. Beyond helping patients conceive, the centre emphasises preventive care, health screening and egg freezing. The clinic reports a per-cycle IVF pregnancy rate of roughly 30–40%, with about 70% of retrieved eggs fertilising and around 90% of fertilised eggs developing into embryos by the following day (clinic figures, not broken down by age band).

Patient Journey
- First assessment. The doctor takes the couple’s medical and sexual history. The male partner provides a semen analysis; the female partner has a pelvic ultrasound, hormone blood tests and a uterine and tubal evaluation such as a foam contrast sonography.
- Cycle start. On day 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle, a transvaginal ultrasound confirms there are no cysts, and baseline hormones are checked during the first cycle.
- Stimulation. Daily fertility injections run for about 8–10 days, with 2–4 ultrasound monitoring scans and an antagonist to prevent early ovulation; a trigger injection is given once the leading follicle reaches 18 mm or more.
- Egg collection. Thirty-four to thirty-six hours after the trigger, eggs are collected under local or conscious sedation in roughly 30–45 minutes. Patients rest about two hours and usually return to work the next day.
- Fertilisation and culture. The partner provides a sample on retrieval day, fresh or previously frozen; eggs are fertilised by conventional insemination or ICSI, checked the next day (about 70% fertilise) and grown to embryos.
- Transfer and test. Embryos are transferred on day 2, 3 or 5 without anaesthesia, usually one or two (up to three in special cases). Surplus good-quality embryos are frozen, and a blood pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.
Appointments are required, and the clinic is located in Central.
Local Legal Framework
Assisted reproduction in Hong Kong is governed by the Human Reproductive Technology Ordinance (Cap. 561) and regulated by the Reproductive Technology Council (CHRT). Only licensed centres may provide reproductive technology services, and overall clinical responsibility must rest with a Medical Council-recognised specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery or reproductive medicine.
- Sex selection is not permitted without a clear medical indication, under the Code of Practice on Reproductive Technology and Embryone Research.
- Egg freezing: single women may legally freeze eggs to preserve fertility, but using frozen eggs for IVF in Hong Kong requires the woman to be married and infertile.
- Storage limits: gametes and embryos may be stored up to 10 years for elective freezing, or up to 10 years or until age 55, whichever is later, where there is a medical reason such as cancer treatment.
