About Shady Grove Fertility - Richmond
Shady Grove Fertility - Richmond is the core SGF center in Virginia, located in the Stony Point area of southern Richmond. SGF was founded more than 30 years ago by Michael J. Levy, M.D., and Arthur W. Sagoskin, M.D., and has grown into one of the largest fertility networks in the United States, with more than 100,000 babies born and over 5,000 five-star patient reviews.
In 2018, the Richmond practice joined forces with Virginia Fertility Associates and VAIVF & Andrology Center, becoming the largest IVF practice in Greater Richmond. The Stony Point center operates a full-service IVF laboratory (embryology, endocrine and andrology) that handles egg retrieval, embryo culture, ICSI, PGT preparation and transfers — one of only two SGF IVF labs in Virginia (the other is at SGF Jones Institute in Norfolk).
According to the SART 2023 Final report (ClinicPKID=2313), SGF Richmond reported 2,011 total cycles with live birth rates per intended egg retrieval of 61.1% for patients under 35, 45.1% for ages 35-37, 33.3% for ages 38-40, and 10.8% for ages over 40 (weighted 41-42 at 13.3% and >42 at 7.9%). New patient cumulative rates are higher: 73.1% under 35, 67.5% at 35-37, and 56.6% at 38-40. The under-35 rate exceeds the SART national average of 53.2%. As a SART member (SART#0345), data is verified by Medical Director Benjamin Harris, M.D., and reported to SART and CDC annually.

Local Legal Framework
Virginia allows IVF, egg freezing, egg/sperm donation and preimplantation genetic testing without statutory restriction. Gestational surrogacy is legal in Virginia, with agreements enforceable under state law (Virginia Code § 20-156 et seq.). Virginia does not mandate IVF coverage in employer-sponsored insurance, though some plans offer fertility benefits; SGF Richmond accepts a wide range of insurance plans in the Richmond, Roanoke, Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas. Legal specifics should be reviewed with qualified counsel based on individual circumstances.
