About

About UCLA Fertility and Reproductive Health Center

This is the fertility arm of UCLA Health’s academic reproductive medicine program. Every physician here is a reproductive endocrinologist, and the clinic sits inside the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine. Care is delivered at the Santa Monica OB/GYN Specialty Suite, and the faculty also work out of Westwood. The doctors hold privileges at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, so a patient who needs imaging, surgery, oncology or endocrinology during treatment is not referred outside the system.

A note on the timeline. The founding date attached to this profile, 1955, is UCLA Health’s system-wide founding, not the year this fertility program opened. Our sources do not document when the ART service itself began, and IVF as a treatment only dates to 1978, so we do not claim a “since 1955” history for this center. The physicians’ training records we do hold run from 2004 to 2023.

On outcomes, the clinic’s own CDC 2022 ART figures report 42.2% for patients under 35, 42.4% at 35 to 37, 28.4% at 38 to 40 and 18.3% over 40, across 594 completed ART cycles. Our source lists these as the clinic’s reported age-band outcomes but does not break out whether each is measured per egg retrieval or per embryo transfer, so we report the numbers without assigning that metric. The CDC also does not separate fresh from frozen cycles for this clinic in the data we hold. 594 cycles makes this a mid-sized academic program rather than a high-throughput private clinic.

The comparison table rendered below this section shows a national row drawn from the SART 2023 National Summary. That row is a different registry (SART, not CDC) and a different reporting year (2023, not 2022) than the clinic figures above. Because the two rows are not the same measurement, we do not subtract one from the other and do not describe the clinic as above or below the national average on this page.

Accreditations & Awards

  • SART member clinic reporting to the CDC. Program-level cycle and outcome data are filed with the CDC’s national ART surveillance system for 2022.
  • Board-certified reproductive endocrinologists. Each physician on staff holds American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology certification; several are certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility subspecialty.
  • Newsweek recognition. UCLA’s own program page states the center ranks highly in Newsweek’s annual America’s Best Fertility Clinics survey. We report this as the clinic’s self-described standing.
  • Physician-level awards. Dr. Al-Safi, Dr. Brennan and Dr. Kroener appear on the Super Doctors Southern California list and the Los Angeles Magazine Top Doctors list across recent years. These honor individual reputation.
  • Institution-wide laboratory accreditation (context only). UCLA Health’s clinical laboratories are documented at CAP and the hospital system at JCI in our research. These are system-level accreditations; our sources do not record a separate CAP accreditation for this clinic’s embryology lab.
  • General hospital rankings are not IVF evidence. System-wide press and hospital ratings describe the parent institution, not ART outcomes at this address, and we do not use them to imply anything about IVF success here.

Why Choose UCLA Fertility and Reproductive Health Center

  • An academic REI division, not a standalone lab. The physicians practice inside a medical school department and run research and clinical trials alongside patient care, so questions about complex endocrine or genetic cases route to people who study them.
  • Subspecialty backup inside one system. Oncofertility work is coordinated with UCLA’s oncologists, male-factor evaluation is referred to the UCLA Men’s Clinic, and genetic counseling and PGT sit under the same roof as the IVF program.
  • Genuine LGBTQ+ depth. Reciprocal IVF, donor sperm and third-party reproduction are named services, one physician (Dr. Roman) is attached to UCLA’s Gender Health Program working with transmasculine and gender-diverse patients, and three of the four physicians are flagged as LGBTQ+ champions.
  • Preservation is a core line, not an add-on. Egg, sperm and embryo freezing are offered both for planned delay and urgently before cancer treatment.
  • A measured program size. At 594 reported cycles in 2022 this is a moderate-volume center. Patients choosing it are trading some throughput for academic resources and hospital-level backup; that trade-off is stated plainly rather than glossed over.

IVF & Fertility Services

  • Fertility evaluation: hormone and ovarian-reserve testing, transvaginal ultrasound, uterine cavity assessment and semen analysis to establish the cause before treatment is chosen.
  • IUI (intrauterine insemination): washed partner or donor sperm placed into the uterus.
  • IVF (in vitro fertilization): controlled ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, laboratory fertilization and embryo transfer, fresh or frozen.
  • ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection): single-sperm injection used with IVF for male factor or fertilization concerns.
  • PGT-A and PGT-M: embryo screening for chromosome number, and diagnostic testing for a known single-gene condition carried by a parent or donor.
  • Egg and embryo freezing: cryopreservation for planned delay or medical reasons.
  • Donor eggs: donor oocytes fertilized and transferred to the recipient.
  • Gestational carrier care: programs for patients who cannot carry a pregnancy.
  • Oncofertility: fertility preservation coordinated with oncology before chemotherapy or radiation.
  • Reproductive surgery: management of endometriosis, fibroids, endometrial polyps and uterine abnormalities.
  • Genetic counseling: risk assessment for inheritable conditions.

The program diagnoses and treats infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, recurrent pregnancy loss, premature ovarian failure, congenital uterine (Mullerian) anomalies and irregular uterine bleeding.

Fees & Packages

There is no published price list for treatment at this center. UCLA Health maintains standard price-transparency material for its services; ask the billing office for procedure-specific figures rather than relying on network averages.

On coverage, the individual physician pages point patients to an “insurance accepted” lookup, so coverage is handled plan by plan. We found no source establishing what any insurance mandate at this clinic actually pays for, or a documented employer or state fertility-preservation coverage requirement for this program, so we make no insurance-coverage or fertility-preservation mandate claim here. Verify your own benefits before starting a cycle.

Patient Journey

  1. Request an appointment by calling the center’s number; a customer-care specialist connects you to a fertility specialist.
  2. Fertility evaluation with a reproductive endocrinologist to identify the underlying cause and discuss which treatments fit.
  3. A personalized plan covering options from IUI, IVF and ICSI through genetic counseling, egg freezing or third-party reproduction.
  4. Cycle treatment and monitoring, with the center’s patient-education resources, IVF class and written patient instructions used along the way.
  5. Follow-up through the UCLA Health clinics.

UCLA Health describes this consult-to-plan-to-monitor pathway but does not publish cycle wait times, morning monitoring schedules or exact testing dates in our sources, so we do not state them.

California is among the most permissive U.S. states for assisted reproduction, which matters for the services this center emphasizes.

  • Egg donation is legal here, and parentage sits with the intended parents rather than the donor. California Family Code §7613 provides that a person who donates eggs, sperm or embryos for a pregnancy achieved through a licensed physician is not treated in law as the mother or father of the resulting child. Written informed consent is part of the process. One caution on citations you may see elsewhere, including in the front-matter record on this page: California Health and Safety Code §125355 governs compensation where eggs are collected for research, not egg donation as clinical treatment, so it is not the authority behind a donor program like this one.
  • Gestational surrogacy is enforceable under the California Family Code §7960-7962. Both compensated and altruistic arrangements are recognized, and intended parents can secure a pre-birth parentage order after court review of the agreement.
  • LGBTQ+ family building: intended parents, same-sex couples and single patients may use donor gametes or a gestational carrier, and both parents can be legally recognized. Our sources record that California protects this family-building route but do not cite a statute number for it, so we do not supply one.
  • PGT-A and PGT-M face no extra state restriction beyond standard informed consent.
  • Embryo status: California has not legislated the legal standing of embryos. Disposition is set by the reproductive agreement you sign, so read it carefully.
