About

About Pacific Fertility Center

Pacific Fertility Center has been treating infertility in San Francisco since 1986, and on the most recent federal reporting published for it, it beat the national frozen-embryo benchmark in every age band where SART publishes one. SART 2023 final reporting (ClinicPKID 2075) shows live birth rates per transfer of frozen, PGT-A tested blastocysts at 51.6% under 35, 57.3% at 35-37, 51.6% at 38-40, 39.7% at 41-42, and 47.7% over 42 — the first four sit above the national frozen-transfer average for the same age group, and SART publishes no national figure for the over-42 group, so that last one goes unranked. The practice dates to 1986; its About page anchors the current center to 1999, when the present San Francisco organization took shape, and the clinic counts more than 13,000 babies welcomed across that history.

The main office sits at 55 Francisco Street in Rincon Square, a short walk from the Embarcadero transit hub, with a second location in Greenbrae serving Marin County and the North Bay. Pacific Fertility is part of The Prelude Network, a national reproductive medicine group, while keeping local physician leadership — Medical Director Isabelle Ryan, MD, who joined the center in 1999, oversees the clinical team and the egg bank. The embryology laboratory is in-house and CAP-accredited, and Pacific Fertility Egg Bank is described by the clinic as Northern California’s first frozen donor-egg program and the largest independent egg bank in the region.

Accreditations & Awards

  • SART member clinic — cycle outcomes reported to the CDC through SART under a single Pacific Fertility Center registration (ClinicPKID 2075); 2023 final data is publicly verifiable, though SART does not break results out by the San Francisco versus Marin campus
  • CAP-accredited embryology laboratory under CLIA-certified operation; the clinic also advertises an “IVF Lab Perfect Score Certification”
  • Newsweek America’s Best Fertility Clinics — listed in the 2024 ranking and No. 46 nationally in 2026
  • Fertility Equity Achievement Award — received in 2026 for inclusive-care commitments
  • Castle Connolly Top Doctors — multiple physicians on staff, including recognition spanning 2010-2026 for Medical Director Isabelle Ryan, MD and 2017-2025 for Liyun Li, MD
  • The Prelude Network member — shared protocols and laboratory standards across a national reproductive medicine network

Why Choose Pacific Fertility Center

  • Outperformance across every age band, on the hardest metric. The 2023 SART numbers above are live births per transfer of genetically tested frozen blastocysts — the cycle path most Bay Area clinics now use — and PFC clears the national average in each band with a published comparator, including 41-42-year-olds at 39.7% against 29.3% nationally.
  • Its own egg bank. Pacific Fertility Egg Bank lets the same physicians who run your cycle select, screen, and vitrify donor eggs in-house; the clinic pitches immediate donor availability and lower cost than fresh donation cycles.
  • Monitoring that fits a workday. Early-morning, evening, and weekend appointments are standard practice for nurses, physicians, and the lab — a real consideration during stimulation, when scans land every two to three days.
  • Serious LGBTQ+ depth. Brent Monseur, MD, who sees patients in San Francisco, founded Stanford Medicine’s Q+ LGBTQ+ Family Building clinic and chaired the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group.
  • Mandarin-language care. Liyun Li, MD built PFC’s China Patient Program in 2014 and sees patients in spoken and written Mandarin; the clinic maintains a dedicated Chinese-language information page.
  • Volume. The center reported 1,813 ART cycles in 2023, roughly double the ~932-cycle national per-clinic average — embryology teams at this scale see every lab problem twice.

IVF & Fertility Services

  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with ICSI, blastocyst culture, and frozen or fresh embryo transfer
  • Egg freezing and fertility preservation, the anchor service of Pacific Fertility Egg Bank alongside donor-egg cycles
  • Genetic testing: PGT-A (comprehensive chromosome screening) on embryos during IVF; the physicians’ profiles also reference carrier screening
  • IUI and ovulation induction for simpler infertility presentations
  • Donor egg and gestational surrogacy programs under a dedicated Third-Party Parenting service led by the medical director
  • Male infertility treatment
  • LGBTQ+ family building for same-sex couples, trans and nonbinary patients, and single parents by choice
  • Reproductive surgery: laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures offered by the surgical members of the physician team
  • International patient program with remote consultation, scheduling support, and Mandarin services
  • Counseling and emotional-health support integrated with treatment teams

Fees & Packages

There is no published price list. The clinic’s FAQ references IVF cycles starting at about $11,930, and its financing page points patients to a financial coordination team for cycle-specific quotes rather than posting package rates. PFC works with patients’ medical insurance plans where coverage applies, self-pay pathways are standard, and a BUNDL fertility payment package is offered as an option. Expect medication costs, anesthesia, PGT biopsy and testing fees, and embryo storage to be quoted separately — ask the billing team for a written all-in estimate before starting stimulation.

Patient Journey

  1. Consultation — in person at San Francisco or Marin, or remotely for international and out-of-state patients; fertility history and goals reviewed with a physician or nurse practitioner
  2. Testing — ovarian reserve and hormone workup, semen analysis, imaging, and any genetic carrier screening indicated
  3. Treatment plan — physician-built path calibrated to age, diagnosis, and budget; financial coordinator reviews insurance and payment options in parallel
  4. Stimulation and monitoring — roughly 8-12 days of injectables with serial ultrasounds and bloodwork, available at early-morning, evening, and weekend hours
  5. Retrieval and fertilization — transvaginal egg retrieval under sedation; ICSI or conventional insemination in the CAP-accredited in-house lab, with embryos cultured to blastocyst
  6. PGT-A and cryopreservation — embryos biopsied and frozen pending screening results, which is why the clinic’s SART numbers above are frozen-transfer numbers
  7. Transfer and confirmation — single frozen embryo transfer, blood pregnancy test about 10-14 days later, and monitoring continued through roughly 8-10 weeks

California is among the most permissive ART states in the U.S., and Pacific Fertility’s service lineup — egg bank, surrogacy program, PGT — is built on that framework:

  • Surrogacy: gestational carrier agreements are enforceable under Family Code Sections 7960-7962, with commercial arrangements recognized and pre-birth orders routinely available naming intended parents
  • Egg and sperm donation: California does not prohibit clinical donation, and it is carried out on written informed consent. One correction worth stating plainly, because you will see the citation quoted around California fertility: Health and Safety Code Section 125355 governs compensation where eggs are collected for research, not clinical egg donation, so it is not the legal basis for a donor program. That a donor is not a legal parent of a child conceived from the donation runs through Family Code Section 7613 and, where the parties want it settled in advance, a court parentage order
  • PGT: no state-level restriction on PGT-A or PGT-M beyond standard consent
  • LGBTQ+ access: the Uniform Parentage Act and domestic partnership law (Family Code Sections 297-297.5) secure parentage for same-sex and unmarried intended parents; California bans conversion-adjacent refusals of fertility services
  • Embryo status: embryos are special property, not legal persons; disposition is governed by the consent agreements signed at creation

I would happily recommend Pacific Fertility to anyone I know struggling to get pregnant or beginning their journey to starting a family. This process is HARD, but I always felt supported and safe with my physicians at Pacific Fertility. I was under Dr Agard’s care for the majority of my IVF experience, and from my initial diagnosis to my second transfer (that was successful), she was compassionate, intelligent and professional. My egg retrieval, performed by Dr Li, went incredibly smooth and the nerves I felt were dissipated by her calm confidence. The first appointment I had with Dr Strug was fine, I left a little unsure of the information he gave me, however he performed my first transfer and although it wasn’t successful, I felt my initial judgements on him were more related to my misunderstanding and not him as a person. He and the nurse who performed that transfer made me feel very relaxed and hopeful! Overall, my husband and I are so grateful to the staff we encountered at Pacific Fertility. They answered any questions we had, fixed any paperwork or financial discrepancies quickly and made a tough experience feel doable and hopeful!! Thank you Pacific Fertility for helping us start our family!!

Truly wish I could give them negative stars. Do your research before going to PFC. I was a patient with them for years with too many negative outcomes to count. I finally switched fertility clinics after giving PFC too many chances, and I had a successful pregnancy on the first try with the new clinic.

I truly can’t say enough great things about Pacific Fertility, hands down the best experience I’ve ever had at a medical office. Every person there was incredibly friendly and helpful with everything I needed along the way (shout out to dr Ryan, Angela, the nurses, and the front desk). I personally hate having to call doctors offices to get in touch, and they had an app to message on and were super responsive which made this much easier for me. Fantastic experience from start to finish with every person I worked with, will be recommending to anyone I can in the Bay Area! Thank you guys!!

We loved Pacific Fertility Center and had an amazing experience. Dr. Li and the entire staff were amazing and made the entire experience truly magical for us. We now have the security knowing no matter what we will have a family one day! I cannot recommend this place enough and if you work nearby it’s a lifesaver when you have to start going in multiple times a week before the retrieval.

This is so sad. I used to recommend Dr. Ryan to all my friends. But after recent services I have learned that I was grossly misled. As much as I respect and like her, she recommended that we retrieve limited eggs despite other clinics telling they wouldn’t have recommended that. I have come to realize that all this clinic cares about is their money. Their financial coordinator and billing team is a further joke. They all claim to care about advocating for their patient. But that is the biggest farce I have seen. They don’t care about their patient as long as the money keeps coming from somewhere. Moreover, their billing team, Tatianna is the worst person I have spoken to in my life. They have zero respect for women going through a tremendously personal and hard journey. I would stay clear of this place. It’s just a cash cow with no regards for their patients. I wish I had changed doctors sooner.

Since we started our journey, this clinic gave us stress. Zero customer service if it was not for the location, we would definitely go somewhere else. The last thing you want for your wife is to be under unnecessary stress.

After working with another clinic, I transferred my care to Dr. Strug at PFC, and the difference was night and day. Dr. Strug is incredibly attentive and thoughtful. He took the time to thoroughly answer my questions, walk through my concerns, and most importantly tailor an approach that addressed some of the specific challenges I had been facing. I felt like I had a clear, personalized plan rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. Along the way we also discovered that I had persistent thin endometrial lining issues, which can make a frozen embryo transfer much more challenging. Fortunately, Dr. Strug happens to have a specialty in treating thin lining. His experience and flexibility in approaching the problem made something that initially felt impossible start to feel manageable. I really appreciated that he was open to approaches beyond the more rigid “one way only” methods that some clinics still follow. Thanks to his care, we were able to successfully navigate both an egg retrieval and embryo transfer, which felt like a huge milestone after a difficult journey. I also want to highlight the broader care team at PFC. They were consistently responsive, kind, and helpful throughout the process. Whether it was answering detailed questions or helping coordinate logistics, I always felt supported. I’m incredibly grateful for the care I received and would highly recommend Dr. Strug and the team at PFC, especially for anyone who may have had a more complex or challenging fertility journey.

Dr. Strug is simply the best ♥️, and the entire staff helped me so much throughout the whole process. Thank you so very much for such a wonderful egg retrieval experience.
