IVF in New York: Complete Guide to Costs, Visas & Stays

IVF in New York costs $15,000 to $30,000 per cycle before insurance, and most international patients spend 19 to 26 days in the US across two trips. This guide covers everything after you pick a clinic: the B1/B2 medical visa, flights, NYC housing rules, transit, climate, diet and timeline.

For pricing see IVF cost in New York; for the medical steps how IVF is done step by step, for an introduction what is IVF.

Is New York the Right IVF Destination for You?

At $15,000-$30,000 per cycle New York is one of the most expensive IVF cities on earth — but for complex cases, third-party reproduction and LGBTQ+ families it is close to irreplaceable.

Where New York genuinely wins

  • Complex-case depth. Patients over 40 with repeated implantation failure, severe male factor or PGT-M needs benefit from academic centers such as NYU Langone Fertility Center.
  • Surrogacy certainty. The Child-Parent Security Act (CPSA) legalizes compensated gestational surrogacy with a pre-birth parentage order.
  • Regulated data. Every US IVF clinic reports outcomes to the CDC, and New York adds independent NYSDOH lab certification.

“The ART Success Rates national database contains pregnancy and birth results from clinics performing assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures in the United States.” — U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Assisted Reproductive Technology Success Rates report, 2024

Check a clinic’s outcomes for your age band at the CDC ART success rates portal, not marketing.

The downsides, stated plainly

  • Cost. $15,000-$30,000 per cycle puts NYC among the world’s most expensive IVF markets.
  • Distance. Nonstop flights from China run 15-16.5 hours with a 12-13 hour time difference.
  • Visa gate. Chinese passports require an in-person interview with 2026 waits that swing widely.
  • Housing rules. Short-term rental laws are far stricter than most cities’.

If you are budget-sensitive and under 35, home-country or Southeast Asian care costs 1/3 to 1/5 of New York; for non-medical sex selection Thailand is the pragmatic choice, since mainstream US clinics refuse it. Choose New York (or California) for age 40+, PGT-M, surrogacy or LGBTQ+ legal certainty — see the US vs Thailand IVF comparison and the California IVF cost guide.

How Do You Get a US Visa for IVF Treatment?

There is no dedicated “medical visa”: IVF patients travel on the standard B1/B2 visitor visa, selecting Medical Treatment as the DS-160 purpose.

2026 fee breakdown

ItemAmountNotes
MRV application fee$185Non-refundable
Visa Integrity Fee$250PL 119-21, effective October 1, 2025 (FY2026); charged after issuance with no working refund path as of mid-2026 — treat as non-refundable
EVUS enrollment$30.75Valid 2 years
Expedited interview~$750Select posts, limited slots

So first-time application costs about $435 up front ($185 + $250); an existing 10-year visa only needs the $30.75 EVUS fee.

Five 2026 changes: the interview-waiver window shrank from 48 to 12 months; the past 5 years of social media must be declared; DS-160 must precede booking; a new passport voids EVUS; waits swing weeks-to-months — plan 3-4 months.

The medical-purpose document pack

Beyond passport, DS-160 confirmation, 51x51mm photo, employment letter, bank statements and property deed, add a clinic invitation / treatment plan letter (issued after a $3,000-$5,000 deposit), English translations of home labs (AMH, hormone panel, ultrasound, semen analysis), and a round-trip itinerary near the clinic.

Timing: remote consult + invitation letter at T-4 months; DS-160 and fees at T-3.5; interview at T-3, allowing a 2-8 week admin buffer; flights and housing at T-1 with EVUS filed 72+ hours before departure; repeat tests at T-2 weeks.

At the border, state plainly: medical treatment, short stay; the admitted length sits on your I-94 and a cycle needs 3-5 weeks, so explain your plan if given less. Never mention work, and declare cash above $10,000.

Flights and the Three NYC Airports

All nonstops from China land at JFK, the best rail access to Manhattan; Newark (EWR) suits connections but has 2026 AirTrain construction; LaGuardia is domestic-only.

Getting there and getting in

Nonstops to JFK: Beijing — Air China CA982 / CA981 (~16 h 35 min), Shanghai — China Eastern MU588 / MU587 (~15 h), Guangzhou (~16 h), Xiamen / Fuzhou (~16-17 h); peak-season round trips run ¥8,000-¥15,000, off-peak near ¥5,000, and connections via Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong or Taipei take 19-24 hours.

JFK to ManhattanCostTime
AirTrain + subway$8.50 + $3.00 ≈ $11.5060-75 min
AirTrain + LIRR$13.75 off-peak / $15.75 peak30-45 min
Yellow taxi$70 flat + tolls + tip ≈ $90-$11545-75 min
Uber / Lyft$45-$90 (peaks $100-$160)45-75 min

Two 2026 changes: the JFK AirTrain fare drops from $8.50 to $4.25 from June 30 through Labor Day (September 7) — the subway trip then costs about $7.15 — and Newark AirTrain closes weekdays 5:00-15:00 (shuttle, add 20-30 min), again September 30 – October 30, 2026 and October 30, 2026 – January 15, 2027. Stimulation medications need a 2-8°C cold chain, so carry them with ice packs in hand luggage and declare them as prescription medication.

Where Should You Stay Near a NYC Fertility Clinic?

The core trade-off: staying near the clinic is expensive, staying cheap costs an extra subway hour daily — and during monitoring you may visit every 1-3 days, arriving at 7 or 8 am.

Borough comparison of 2026 monthly rents

Area1-bedroomRoom in shared flatCommute
Manhattan Midtown / UES$3,800-$6,000$2,000-$3,000Walkable, 10-20 min
Lower Manhattan / Chinatown$3,400-$5,000$1,800-$2,60020-30 min
Flushing, Queens$1,800-$2,400$800-$1,10040-60 min (7 train)
Astoria, Queens$2,400-$3,200$1,000-$1,20025-35 min
Long Island City$3,000-$4,200$1,000-$1,20015-25 min
Brooklyn$2,600-$4,200$1,000-$1,60030-50 min
Jersey City, NJ$3,000-$3,800$1,400-$2,50015-30 min (PATH)

Strategy A — clinic walk zone puts monitoring outside rush hour at top rent; Strategy B — Flushing serves tight budgets and 3+ week stays with the 7 train direct in 40-60 minutes; Strategy C stays near the clinic for monitoring, then moves cheaper between retrieval and transfer. Before signing, verify an elevator, kitchen, laundry and a realistic 7:30 am route — NYC rentals often enforce the 40x income rule and broker fees up to 15% of annual rent.

Can You Book an Airbnb in New York? The Local Law 18 trap

Whole-unit rentals of under 30 consecutive days are essentially illegal in NYC — legal hosting needs a live-in host, max 2 paying guests and OSE registration, and only about 3,000 listings qualify citywide — so non-compliant “entire apartment” bookings can be cancelled right before your trip. A 30+ day monthly rental is unrestricted and safest; under 30 days book an exempt hotel or serviced apartment (Sonder, AKA, Blueground).

Getting Around: Subway, OMNY and Taxis

Subway rides cost $3.00 flat (after the January 2026 adjustment) with no peak pricing, and the OMNY weekly cap — 12 taps on one card or device (about $35) Monday-Sunday — frees every remaining ride that week, so use one payment method; transfers within 2 hours are free and contactless international cards need no MetroCard.

  • PATH costs $3.25 per ride as of May 4, 2026.
  • Many legacy stations have no elevator — in late stimulation and for 48 hours after retrieval take taxis, since 7:00-10:00 am traffic can turn a 5 km trip into 40 minutes. Don’t rent a car: parking runs $200-$600/month.

When Is the Best Season to Do IVF in New York?

September and October are the best months — 18-24°C, falling humidity, the year’s highest share of clear days — because weather can derail a rigid treatment schedule.

  • Spring (March-May) — recommended: 9-21°C days swinging fast (8°C to 22°C in a week); April-May pollen.
  • Summer (June-August) — weigh carefully: July averages 29°C at 65-80% humidity, unkind during stimulation, though daylight runs 15 hours.
  • Autumn (September-October) — the best window: October lows stay near 11°C and September holds the year’s highest clear-sky rate, about 63% of daylight hours.
  • Winter (December-February) — avoid: January lows average -2°C with about 28 inches of annual snow — one blizzard can wreck a monitoring schedule — and only 9 h 15 min of daylight.

Packing: medications in original packaging with English prescriptions, a cold-chain pouch, and 110V type A/B adapters; grip boots in winter, light jacket and SPF30+ in summer.

Food, Diet and What You Cannot Bring Into the US

Flushing, Brooklyn’s 8th Avenue and Chinatown keep Chinese groceries cheap — two pounds of choy sum cost $2.99 in Flushing versus $3.99 at a Manhattan Whole Foods. Self-catering holds food costs to $300-$600 a month, mixed cooking to $600-$1,000, eating out to $900-$1,500 (fast food $12-$25, mains $50-$90), before the 8.875% restaurant tax and 18-22% tip that land a $48 meal at $65-$70.

Eating through stimulation and transfer

  • High protein in late stimulation lowers OHSS risk; with bloating, cut salt and take electrolytes. Keep caffeine under 200 mg per day and no alcohol, male partners included before retrieval day.
  • Zero raw food — sashimi, raw oysters and unpasteurized cheese carry Listeria risk, worst after transfer. No self-prescribed tonics or high-dose vitamins — clear every supplement with your endocrinologist; NYC tap water is safe.

⚠️ Chinese herbal medicine at the border: a deportation-grade risk

The Chinese Consulate-General in New York prohibits ephedrine-class products, strychnine-class (arthritis and bone-spur tablets), morphine-class (stomach-intestine tablets, cough syrups) and any animal-derived TCM — scorpion, centipede, toad, pangolin, tiger bone, deer antler, musk, tortoise shell, bird’s nest and donkey-hide gelatin (ejiao).

Ejiao and bird’s nest — the two most common fertility-prep items — are both banned; travelers have been denied entry and banned for 5 years over prohibited ingredients. Bring only labeled Western medicines in original packaging with an English prescription, and buy IVF drugs locally in New York.

Phones, Payments and Insurance

The most overlooked item is travel medical insurance: most policies explicitly exclude assisted-reproduction complications — OHSS hospitalization, post-retrieval bleeding, ectopic pregnancy. Ask the clinic what self-pay OHSS admission costs and read every exclusion before you fly.

An eSIM works on landing: 1 GB / 7 days ~$4, 3 GB / 30 days ~$9, 10 GB / 30 days $14-$23, unlimited / 15 days ~$39. A real US number is strongly advised for clinic codes and pharmacy calls — Verizon’s Visible Travel Pass runs $15 for 7 days / $25 for 14 / $35 for 30 / $45 for 45 days.

Visa / Mastercard are the hard currency — carry two networks; UnionPay and Alipay / WeChat Pay cover Chinatown-zone merchants only. Carry $200-$400 cash, tip as fixed cost (18-22% restaurants, 15-20% taxis, 15% delivery, $2-$5 per night housekeeping), mains run at 110V type A/B.

How Long Do You Need to Stay for One IVF Cycle?

The standard two-trip plan keeps total US time at 19-26 days: 12-16 days for stimulation and retrieval, then 7-10 days for the frozen embryo transfer.

Preparing at home

Most clinics accept home labs with English translations: AMH, cycle day 2-3 hormones, ultrasound (AFC), semen analysis plus DNA fragmentation, mandatory infectious screening (hepatitis B and C, HIV, syphilis), HSG if indicated, thyroid and HbA1c. Finish dental work, start folic acid — IVF preparation checklist — and hold a video consult 4-8 weeks before departure for a preliminary protocol on landing.

Which trip structure?

PhaseContentStay
Trip 1 (Plan A)Arrive cycle day 2 → 8-12 days monitoring → retrieval → home 1-2 days later12-16 days (18-20 with rapid PGT)
IntervalCulture + PGT, results in 7-14 days, at home—
Trip 2Estrogen at home → US monitoring → transfer → leave 2 days after pregnancy test7-10 days
Total US time~19-26 days

Plan B — one trip with a fresh transfer — takes 25-35 days, now under 20% of cycles (strict lining, OHSS risk); low-AMH patients banking embryos add 10-12 days per extra retrieval.

Monitoring days and the male partner

Clinic at 7:00-8:30 am for bloodwork and a scan, 1-2 hours for results, dose adjustment, out — two or three morning hours daily. He must attend the first consult, the retrieval day and the transfer if required; the minimum is 3 days around retrieval plus 3 days around transfer.

What Does New York Law Guarantee?

New York offers protections most destinations cannot — compensated surrogacy, protected single-parent and LGBTQ+ access, birthright citizenship — within clear limits.

The 2020 fertility mandate gives insured employees of 100+ groups up to 3 IVF cycles plus fertility preservation; unavailable to visitors, but the demand tightens backlogs and self-pay pricing — NYC IVF cost guide.

The Child-Parent Security Act — CPSA, effective February 15, 2021

  • Gestational surrogacy is legal and compensated — a 2021 reversal from criminal status — while traditional surrogacy (surrogate’s own egg) remains banned.
  • The surrogate must be 21 or older; both sides need independent lawyers; payment flows through third-party escrow; intended parents carry her health and life insurance and can obtain a pre-birth order naming parents on the birth certificate.

Egg donation is legal with reasonable compensation under FDA-mandated infectious screening, and PGT-A and PGT-M are widely available — PGT genetic screening guide. Non-medical sex selection is refused — ASRM ethics guidance opposes it and most SART clinics decline — can you choose gender with IVF.

Single women and same-sex couples cannot be refused care based on marital status or orientation. Under the 14th Amendment a US-born baby acquires US citizenship; Chinese families then obtain a Chinese Travel Document; hukou requirements vary by city.

Important: mainland China bans commercial egg donation and surrogacy in all forms. This section describes New York State law objectively only, not advice or encouragement; Chinese citizens must understand and comply with Chinese law before deciding.

How Much Does IVF in New York Really Cost?

A single cycle runs $15,000-$30,000 before insurance, and reaching a live birth — often 2-3 cycles — typically costs $40,000-$80,000, plus roughly $4,000-$9,000 of non-medical costs for two trips.

FAQ

Q: How early should I start the US visa process for IVF?

At least 3-4 months: waits swing weeks-to-months, administrative processing adds 2-8 weeks, and the waiver window shrank from 48 to 12 months. Compare clinics while you wait — CDC/SART success data by age.

Q: How many days in New York does one cycle take?

19-26 days across two trips: 12-16 for stimulation and retrieval, up to 20 while PGT runs, then 7-10 for a frozen transfer. A single fresh-transfer trip runs 25-35 days.

Q: I already hold a 10-year US visa — what else do I need?

EVUS enrollment, $30.75, valid 2 years — and a new passport voids it, so re-register and pay again after any renewal. File at least 72 hours before departure.

Q: Can I book a monthly flat, or is Airbnb off the table?

Under Local Law 18, sub-30-day whole-unit rentals are effectively illegal in New York City, so short stays should be hotels or serviced apartments. 30-day-and-longer leases stay legal, and Flushing 1-bedrooms run $1,800-$2,400 a month.

Q: Does travel medical insurance cover IVF complications?

Almost never — OHSS, post-retrieval bleeding and ectopic pregnancy are standard exclusions; reserve a contingency beyond the $200-$500 policy for your 19-26 day stay.

Your New York IVF Roadmap

Medical fees are half of IVF in New York; the other half is landing competence — visa timing, housing, clinic runs, border-legal medicines. Sequence it: check clinic success data → remote consult and protocol → start the visa in parallel → book flights and housing only after approval, since the visa is the one variable you cannot compress.
